About the book
What is the Narrative Effect?
Every organization runs on stories. Most of them go unnoticed. And when we don’t shape them on purpose, they shape us.
In The Narrative Effect, executive communication coach Nick Kindler draws on psychological research, case studies, and years of work with senior leaders. He shows how invisible stories drive behaviour, culture, and results, and what leaders can do about it. You’ll learn how to see the story, shift the story, and share the story, and how to live the story you ask others to follow.
Most leaders try to lead with strategy. But strategy only works when it lives inside a story people understand, believe in, and want to be part of.

Praise for The Narrative Effect
“The Narrative Effect takes on the challenge every executive encounters: the plan is sound, yet it’s not driving action in the room. Nick Kindler shows you how to find the story that will resonate with those you lead, and how to inspire an organization to move. This is a book about making a strategy land, not just announcing it.”
Cyril Dimitris
President & CEO of Toyota Canada Inc.
“The Narrative Effect reframes story as something far more consequential than communication. Nick Kindler argues that meaning is the leader’s real work, and that where meaning is absent, people quietly withdraw. This is a serious book about a subject too often treated lightly. It belongs with any leader responsible for taking people somewhere new.”
Debbie Gamble
Group head, chief strategy & marketing officer at Interac
“In The Narrative Effect, Nick Kindler argues that while data might get you a decision, only a story turns it into belief and action. Kindler shows leaders how to find the story an organization is already telling itself, and how to change it. For anyone who wants to move people, and not just inform them, this is an extremely useful resource.”
Dheeraj Paul
Chief digital officer at Bayshore HealthCare
“I’ve seen good strategies die in the room because no one could say why they mattered. Nick Kindler gets at the why—and hands leaders a way to find it before the room checks out.”
Soumak Chatterjee
National leader in financial services at Deloitte Canada
“The Narrative Effect goes beyond the mechanics of change to address the human realities that determine whether leadership transition succeeds or stalls. It speaks to the real work of helping people make sense of uncertainty and move forward with purpose, offering insight that is both practical and appropriately challenging.”
Nelson De Jesus
Executive vice president of global technology, data and AI at CIBC
“The stories people tell shape behaviour long before strategy and process take hold. Nick Kindler shows leaders how to find the story no one has said out loud, and reshape it into a message people lean in to hear.”
Gordon Massey
Executive director of ophthalmology administration at Boston Children’s Hospital
“Highly engaging Gladwell-esque storytelling interwoven with a practical, instructional twists. Relevant for every leader!”
Christian Mayer
Global chief financial officer and CEO of commercial real estate at Colliers
“Nick Kindler reminds us that even in the data-obsessed pharmaceutical industry, it’s the story that turns the numbers into results. If you can’t tell someone why and how, you’ll never make a difference for patients. A must-read for anyone in a leadership role.”
Bradley McLean
Vice president of respiratory and immunology at AstraZeneca Canada Inc.
“The future is arriving faster than our ability to believe in it. The Narrative Effect explains why narrative may be one of the most important leadership technologies of the exponential age.”
Salim Ismail
Chairman and founder of OpenExO, XPRIZE Foundation board member, and bestselling author of Exponential Organizations
“Outcomes are not random. They are the downstream result of the story people believe.”
